How Capptive8 managed $10M+ in Meta spend and built the acquisition engine behind the world's largest obstacle course racing brand - orchestrating campaigns across hundreds of race locations, seasons, and audience segments simultaneously.

Spartan is the world's largest obstacle course racing brand - and one of the fastest-growing sports movements on the planet. Founded by Joe De Sena, a Wall Street trader turned ultramarathon runner who once completed 50 ultra events and 14 Ironmans in a single year, Spartan grew from 500 competitors at its first race in Vermont to over 1 million annual participants across 200+ events in 40+ countries.
The brand acquired its biggest competitor, Tough Mudder, consolidating the two largest names in obstacle racing under one roof. Spartan has been title-sponsored by Reebok, featured on NBC with its own television series, and hosts events at iconic venues like Fenway Park and Citi Field. Joe De Sena is a New York Times bestselling author, and the Spartan brand extends far beyond races - with gym partnerships through Life Time Fitness, a supplement line, a leadership forum, and a massive e-commerce operation.
Spartan had brand recognition that most companies would envy - but brand recognition alone doesn't fill race start lines. The core challenge was scaling new registrations on Meta at an efficient cost per registration, across a business model unlike anything a traditional e-commerce brand faces.
Every Spartan race is location-specific, date-specific, and capacity-limited. There are hundreds of events per year across the US and internationally, each with its own ticket window, pricing tiers, and registration cap. Managing all of this simultaneously - while maintaining cost per registration targets across every location - demands a level of operational precision that goes far beyond running a standard ad account.

A purpose-built account architecture, transformation-focused creative, and attribution clarity that turned a volatile experiment into a predictable growth engine.
We built a framework to manage campaigns for dozens of race locations simultaneously - each with its own budget, creative, targeting, and registration targets. When a race approached capacity, spend scaled back automatically. When underperforming, spend shifted to fill it. The 'Price Is Rising' urgency playbook ramped spend 7 days before price changes, scaled aggressively in the final 2-3 days, and sustained spend 1-3 days after - because performance consistently held strong even past the deadline.
Capptive8 tested thousands of creatives across video, UGC, static, carousel, and GIF formats. The strategic insight: Spartan isn't selling a race - it's selling a life-changing experience. One of the longest-running top performers opened with participants leaping over a wall of flames - visceral, dangerous-looking, and impossible to scroll past. We also found that creative showing groups drove significantly higher AOV: when someone sees a group experience, they're more likely to buy multiple registrations and bring their crew.
The fitness community was already warm to Spartan. Capptive8's job was to break into the mainstream. We built segmented creative strategies for different audience types: the CrossFit enthusiast, the parent seeking weekend adventure, the homeschooling community, and the everyday adult wanting to prove something to themselves. Local race targeting proved particularly effective, driving 2x the ROAS of nationwide campaigns - proximity to a specific event made the decision feel real and actionable.
Before Capptive8, Spartan had vast data but lacked clarity on how to act on it. We brought structure and transparency - clean attribution for new registrations, visibility into which race locations were performing, and a forecasting model connecting creative wins to spend capacity to registration volume. For the first time, the team could look at their Meta channel and see a predictable, scalable growth engine rather than a volatile experiment.
Over a 2.5+ year partnership, Capptive8 tripled Spartan Race's registration volume, cut cost per registration by 60%+, and managed $10M+ in Meta spend with 2x+ ROAS improvement.
